NFL Announces Rule Change for Injured Reserve List Ahead of 2024 Season

Less than three months before the start of the new NFL season, a rule change regarding the injured reserve list is made public.

The NFL has informed the NFLPA players’ union that the rules for naming players to return from the injured reserve list in 2024 have changed.

Accordingly, teams are still allowed to name a maximum of eight players during the regular season. For the postseason, teams are given two additional options.

If a franchise has not used up its eight possible players in the regular season, it can take them into the playoffs, so that a total of ten players can return over the course of the season. A player can return from the injured list twice – including the postseason.

The Detroit Lions had previously proposed allowing an unlimited number of injured reserve returnees in the playoffs.

Before a player can return, he still has to miss at least four games.

Meanwhile, another proposal from the Lions was approved by the NFL. Teams are now allowed to put two players on the IR list on the day the roster is reduced to 53 players. Previously, players had to have been on the roster for at least one day in order to be able to be reactivated from the list later in the year.
