NFL Ordered to Pay Billions in Damages for Sunday Ticket Antitrust Violation

The NFL has lost a lawsuit in U.S. District Court alleging it violated antitrust laws by distributing Sunday-scheduled games through its “Sunday Ticket” program.

Due to this, the NFL will have to pay 4.7 billion dollars to the 2.4 million users who purchased the subscription and 96 million to the 48,000 businesses that acquired it for profit.

The league said in a press release that it will appeal the decision. “We believe the distribution strategy, which includes all NFL games, from those broadcast on free-to-air television in the teams’ markets, as well as the most popular ones, complemented by additional options such as RedZone, Sunday Ticket and NFL+, is by far the most fan-friendly distribution model.”

For years, the NFL sold the ‘Sunday Ticket’ through DirecTV and last year it was broadcast through YouTube. If the NFL loses the appeal, it will cost each team about half a billion dollars.

The NFL launched Sunday Tickett in 1994 to allow fans to watch games not broadcast on FOX or CBS. However, the Mucky Duck sports bar in San Francisco filed the lawsuit in 2015 and it was dismissed in 2017. In 2019, the Ninth Circuit, through Judge Philip Gutierrez, revived the lawsuit as a class action.
