Novak Djokovic Contemplates Wimbledon Return: “Only If I Can Compete at My Maximum”

This Monday, a week before the first exchanges on the courts of the All England Club, the former world number 1, who celebrated his 37th birthday last May, does not rule out appearing for the third round of the Grand Slam of the year. But he doesn’t want to go there just to go there. If he enters the London tournament, it is to really defend his chances. “I will make a decision based on my feelings, and the conclusion that my team and I have reached, based on observations, within four, five or six days. If I can play as close as possible to my maximum, or at my maximum, then I will compete in this competition,” explained the world number 2 to the BBC.

As the exceptional competitor that he is, Djokovic does not want to make up the numbers at Wimbledon. He only plans to go there if he is sure to have his say and add a 25th Grand Slam title to his formidable record. “I didn’t come to play just a few rounds. (…) I will play if I am able,” he insists again. And if not, he will delay his return. “Otherwise, I will give someone else the chance to line up,” he concluded in all honesty.
