Novak Djokovic’s Favorable Draw at 2024 Wimbledon: A Path to His 8th Title?

Novak Djokovic’s rapid recovery will therefore have had a major consequence. The draw for the 2024 Wimbledon edition, carried out this Friday, placed Carlos Alcaraz in Jannik Sinner’s half of the draw, with the Serbian being seeded 2. The latter will thus potentially have to beat “only” the Italian or the Spaniard but not both, on the way to a possible 8th title at the All England Club. French number 1 Ugo Humbert could, for his part, meet… Alcaraz in the round of 16 if logic is respected.

Jannik Sinner trained with Novak Djokovic on Center Court on Thursday, and if he meets him again in the same setting, it will only be for a possible final in a little over two weeks. Until then, the world number 1 will have work to do because luck has not really favored him. After entering the fray against the German Yannick Hanfmann, he has a good chance of finding his compatriot Matteo Berrettini (if he defeats Marton Fucsovics), finalist in 2021 and still very dangerous on grass, in the 2nd round.

A potential Sinner-Berrettini in the 2nd round, Djokovic spared

Then, it is the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, who heckled him in Halle, who could cross his path during a potentially turbulent first week… before the theoretical sequence Ben Shelton – Daniil Medvedev (or Grigor Dimitrov) – Carlos Alcaraz, in eighth, quarter and a half. The contrast is striking with Djokovic’s picture, whose first serious obstacle should be Holger Rune or Karen Khachanov at the start of the second week, before a potential quarter-final against Hubert Hurkacz and a possible semi-final against Alexander Zverev, who is never got this far at Wimbledon.

For Carlos Alcaraz, who will open hostilities on Center Court on Monday against Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal, the first test should come in the 3rd round against Frances Tiafoe or Matteo Arnaldi, before meeting again, at least we can hope, Ugo Humbert in the 8th final. The French number 1 will have to be wary of the Russian Alexander Shevchenko for his entry into the running, but his objective must be this second week since he will not face any player better ranked than him before. Two 100% French duels should be noted between veterans Gaël Monfils and Adrian Mannarino, as well as between Alexandre Müller and Hugo Gaston.

Humbert must aim for Alcaraz, Hurkacz for Fils

In addition, Arthur Fils will try to win his first match at Wimbledon against the Swiss Dominic Stricker to have the opportunity to probably challenge Hubert Hurkacz in the 2nd round. Corentin Moutet and Constant Lestienne have not been spoiled since they will be opposed from the start to Alex de Minaur and Lorenzo Musetti. Arthur Rinderknech and Lucas Pouille will respectively have good moves to play against a Kei Nishikori far from his best level and Laslo Djere.

Next to the Sinner-Alcaraz duo, who will play the troublemakers at Wimbledon?

It will potentially be more delicate for Quentin Halys and Maxime Janvier against Christopher Eubanks, quarter-finalist last year, and Zhizhen Zhang. Arthur Cazaux will have to be wary of Zizou Bergs. Finally, Andy Murray, if he is fit, will appear on the court for his last Wimbledon against the Czech Tomas Machac.

The theoretical round of 16

  • Sinner – Shelton
  • Dimitrov – Medvedev
  • Alcaraz – Humbert
  • Paul – Ruud
  • Rublev – Tsitsipas
  • Fritz – Zverev
  • Hurkacz – De Minaur
  • Rune – Djokovic
