Oier Lazkano and the Movistar Team, rivals to beat in the online event of the Spanish Championship

The Basque Oier Lazkano, current champion, and the powerful Movistar Team block start as the main favorites to be crowned national champion in the online test of the 2024 Spanish Championship, which is held this Sunday on a 201.6 kilometer circuit with more of 3,200 meters of unevenness in San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid).

The test will be made up of five laps of the long circuit, with their corresponding climbs to Fresnedilla de la Oliva, to subsequently face three complete turns of the short loop, which will involve a triple ascent to that first sector of the climb to Abantos. Everything will be decided on the cobblestone slope leading to the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

Among the candidates in the telephone squad, Lazkano, winner of 2023, arrives in great form after dazzling in the Critérium del Dauphiné, just like Javier Romo and Alex Aranburu, who won the Tour of Belgium. Pelayo Sánchez, stage winner in the Giro d’Italia, will also compete for the champion’s jersey; Gonzalo Serrano, Iván Cortina, Carlos Canal or Iván Romeo.

Cofidis, meanwhile, will have as its assets Jesús Herrada, two-time champion of Spain, Rubén Fernández, Jonathan Lastra or the brothers Ion and Gorka Izagirre. For their part, Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step), Omar Fraile (INEOS Grenadiers) –champion in 2021-, Roger Adriá (BORA-hansgrohe), David de la Cruz (Q36.5), Raúl García Pierna start with great options. (Arkea) or Markel Beloki (Education First).

The Caja Rural-Seguros RGA will try to be the protagonist with cyclists like Abel Balderstone, Eduard Prades, Fernando Barceló or last year’s fifth place finisher, Gorka Sorarrain; Kern Pharma will do it with Pablo Castrillo, Urko Berrade, Pau Miquel or Antonio Soto; and Burgos-BH, with José Manuel Díaz Gallego, Ander Okamika or Mario Aparicio.

Regarding the Elite competition, it will be very open, with candidates such as Pablo García, Javier Ibáñez, Vicente Hernáiz, Alejandro Ropero, Eduardo Pérez-Landaluce, José Luis Faura or the two cyclists who played for victory last year, Carlos Gutiérrez and David González.
