NBA News: OKC Thunder trade Josh Giddey for Alex Caruso

The Oklahoma City Thunder are shipping guard Josh Giddey to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Alex Caruso. ESPN reported this late Thursday evening. This gives OKC an excellent defender and three-point shooter, while the Bulls get the playmaker they wanted.

Giddey, the sixth pick in the 2021 draft, was increasingly superfluous as a playmaker alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. At the same time, his weak shooting proved to be his Achilles heel, especially in the last playoffs: The 21-year-old lost his place in the starting five in the series against the Dallas Mavericks (2-4). Giddey averaged 12.3 points last season. With the Bulls, he could slip into the role of the long-term injured point guard Lonzo Ball.

The 30-year-old Caruso was voted into the All-Defense Second Team last season. The American won the title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 and has been playing for the Bulls since 2021. In 2023/24 he made 41 percent of his three-point attempts. Caruso is entering the final year of his contract and is expected to sign a four-year contract extension worth up to $80 million in six months.
