Oldenburg’s Dream Duo: Pedro Calles and Max DiLeo Extend Partnership

They are the dream duo of the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga. Oldenburg coach Pedro Calles (40) and his “minister of defense” Max DiLeo (31) have been working together for six years. When Calles changed clubs, he always took his confidant with him: from Rasta Vechta to the Veolia Towers Hamburg – and from there to the EWE Baskets in 2022.

Now the “marriage” is entering its (dangling?) seventh year. The Oldenburg team has extended the contract with their captain until 2025! Although DiLeo was only able to play 15 games in a plague season with countless injuries.

“Max has a special significance for the team that goes beyond his sporting abilities,” explains boss Hermann Schüller: “Having him as an extended arm who represents the identity of the team and the values of the club is of great value to us. Max is the kind of leader you could only wish for!”

The national player literally exerted himself on the court until he was sick. Calles: “I know Max very well and we all know how important he is for the culture of the team. We are also a club that wants to have a certain continuity in its squad and is known for that.”

This not only makes DiLeo very happy, but also his dog Kaya! After all, Calles’ wife is a veterinarian. If necessary, a trusted person can look after her.

Towers terminate contract with Lukas Meisner

However, there is a divorce at the Towers. DiLeo’s former teammate Lukas Meisner (28) has to go. After a disappointing season for both sides, the contract (until 2025) of the former national player has now been terminated.

With an average of 6.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists, the Braunschweig native played his worst season in his adopted home. Even when the team worked its way out of the hole, the co-captain was still stuck. In addition, there were disagreements with coach Benka Barloschky (36) at the start of the season.

In the press release, Meisner, who also had a job with the main sponsor in addition to basketball, is quoted as saying in a conciliatory tone: “Although the farewell is coming sooner than I personally would have liked, I still look back positively on the three years here in Hamburg. The city has become my home. I am grateful for the countless experiences I have had – on the sporting level, but above all off the field.”

The Towers, on the other hand, would have liked to extend the contract with Will Christmas (27). But according to basketball journalist Rupert Fabig (“BIG”, “Hamburger Abendblatt”), the signs point to a separation here too. Apparently, Telekom Baskets Bonn have made him a higher-paying offer.

Farewell breakdown in Frankfurt

There is also a separation at the newly promoted Frankfurt Skyliners – albeit with obstacles. The media department announced the transfer of point guard Aiden Warnholtz (24/Canada) on social media. Then the post suddenly disappeared again…

According to the “Gießener Allgemeine”, Warnholtz is still going to the local second division team 46ers.

Göttingen gets MVP from Hungary

Olivier Foucart (39) has to work his magic this summer. Although the player budget of BG Göttingen is decreasing slightly, the “Violets” should have nothing to do with the relegation battle as early as possible next season…

This automatically draws attention to the smaller leagues when looking for players. And that’s exactly where Foucart found what he was looking for: Center Demajeo Wiggins (26/USA) comes from Hungary. There, the agile 2.06 meter tall man won the trophy with Szolnoki Olaj and was voted MVP after the final.

“Demajeo wants to win, to develop every day and will approach every game with energy,” says Foucart, describing the advantages of his eighth new signing.

In 2020, Wiggins wanted to move to Germany. The contract with second division club Phoenix Hagen had been negotiated. Then Corona got in the way….
