Olympique Marseille Signs Coach Roberto De Zerbi to Lead New Sporting Path

The French first division football club Olympique Marseille has signed successful coach Roberto De Zerbi.

The 45-year-old signed a contract for the next three seasons, the club announced on Saturday evening. Marseille had already announced an “agreement in principle” on Tuesday. The Italian was coach of the Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion until the end of the last season and was also considered a candidate to succeed Tuchel at FC Bayern.

“The history and prestige that surround OM, the passion and zeal of its fans, the seriousness and enthusiasm” were decisive factors in the decision, explained De Zerbi. He succeeds Jean-Louis Gasset, and his successor in Brighton will be Fabian Hürzeler, who comes from FC St. Pauli.

The arrival of the coach is “a strong signal for the club and the new sporting path,” said President Pablo Longoria. Marseille finished the past season in a disappointing eighth place and will not play internationally next season.
