Only Gauffová can take the title from Šwiatek, the second semi-final will decide the sensational finalist

As part of the 12th playing day of this year’s French Open, both women’s semi-final duels are on the program. The biggest favorite, three-time champion and defending champion Iga Šwiateková will face her colleague from the TOP 10 ranking Coco Gauffová. The American is most likely her last threat on the road to the title, as the second runner-up will emerge from the Grand Slam debutants’ duel between Jasmine Paolini and Mirra Andrejeva.

Overview of the most interesting, Thursday 6/6

Women’s Semi-Finals
Šwiateková (1-Pol.) – Gauffová (3-USA) | Court Philippe-Chatrier (15:00 CEST)
Paoliniová (12-It.) – M. Andrejevová (-) | Court Philippe-Chatrier (17:00 CEST)

Šwiateková – Gauffová | 15:00 CET

Iga Šwiateková was already the biggest favorite before the start of the tournament, and her chances of triumph increased even more after the unexpected failure of the two highest seeds in the lower half of the spider on Wednesday. The 23-year-old Pole is in the semifinals of the French Open for the fourth time and has completely dominated the last three rounds.

In the second round, on the other hand, she was one ball away from elimination when she faced a match point against Naomi Osaka in a battle between four-time Grand Slam champions. However, in the other matches, the world number one reigned and, among other things, outclassed Anastasia Potapova 6:0, 6:0 and former finalist Markéta Vondroušová 6:0, 6:2.

The native of Warsaw is the first world number one in more than 20 years to advance to the semifinals of the French Open in three consecutive years. She managed 33 out of 35 career duels at Roland Garros, in this respect only Chris Evert can match her in the open era.

The defending champion has now won 19 matches in a row on the clay of Paris and has already recorded 17 consecutive victories in the ongoing clay spring (she is one win short of equaling her own longest unbeaten streak on clay). She has a record of 4:1 in the semi-finals of the Grand Slams and has won every semi-final appearance at the French Open.

Coco Gauffová dealt with the first major complications at the ongoing French Open in the quarterfinals, she had to turn the fight against the three-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeurová. In the match, she hit only 55% of the first serves, however, after losing the opening set, she improved her performance and defeated her colleague from the TOP 10 ranking 4:6, 6:2, 6:3.

On the other hand, she did not lose more than seven games in the opening four matches, which includes the scalps of former semifinalist Tamara Zidanšeková and this year’s Australian Open semifinalist Dajana Jastremská. She reached the semi-finals of the Grand Slams for the fourth time in her career, the second time on the Paris clay.

The 20-year-old American won her first two semi-finals at the Grand Slams, the year before at the French Open, she only lost to Šwiatek in the final, and last year she triumphed at her home US Open. But she did not succeed in the third one, at this year’s Australian Open she lost to the later champion Aryna Sabalenková.

At the moment, she is a member of the TOP 3 of the world ranking, but it should be mentioned that she has never won a tournament of a higher category than the WTA 250 away from home. In particular, she has failed in the semifinal stage three times in a row, including a failure against Šwiatek a few weeks ago on clay in Rome .

Paoliniová – Andrejevová | 17:00 CET

It wasn’t until the age of 28 that Jasmine Paolini got beyond the second round of a Grand Slam event for the first time. The Italian also shined at the ongoing French Open and is a new Grand Slam semifinalist. Moreover, after a surprising 6:2, 4:6, 6:4 win over former Wimbledon champion Jelena Rybakinová, she secured her debut in the TOP 10 of the world ranking.

She had more and more work to do in the previous rounds and in the last three duels (also with Bianca Andreescu and Elina Avanesjanova) she needed all three sets. In addition, she will also take part in the doubles competition in Paris, where she and compatriot Sara Errani are in the semi-final stage.

Semi-final participation at the French Open may not be such a big surprise. Last March, she was outside the TOP 70 rankings, but since the beginning of the second half of last season, she has reached the quarterfinals in Cincinnati, the finals in Palermo and Monastir, a triumph at the WTA 1000 in Dubai, and the round of 16 at the Australian Open and in Rome.

The current world top 15 has a record of 5:4 in semi-final duels, 2:1 on clay. Now she can become the third Italian finalist of the French Open, where before the start of this year she had a record of 3:5 in the main competition, in the open era of tennis. Only Francesca Schiavone and Errani made it to the final round.

Mirra Andrejeva registered a historic victory on Wednesday. The Russian comet ran into the clearly favored world number two Aryna Sabalenkova in the quarterfinals and was lucky that Belarus was battling an illness and required a break for treatment. Still, all three sets were needed.

The 17-year-old teenager threw away a 5-3 lead in the opening set and then had to overcome a break deficit in the deciding act. She beat the favorite only after two and a half hours of fighting 6:7, 6:4, 6:4 and became the youngest Grand Slam semifinalist since Martina Hingis in 1997.
