Marc Marquez revealed why he was overwhelmed during the second free practice session (FP2) at the Assen Circuit, Friday (6/28/2024) yesterday. According to him, the strong wind in the afternoon (local time) made it difficult for him to adjust his riding style for the Desmosedici.
In FP1, Marquez performed fast by taking second place or only 0.065 seconds behind Pecco. However, in the next session, The Baby Alien was only able to be in sixth place.
Although slightly faster than his own time in the morning, he was far behind Pecco, who again posted the fastest time by 0.511 seconds. Marquez felt that he was able to go fast in FP1 after almost a month off from the previous series.
However, Marquez admitted that his performance had indeed declined in the final session of the first day of the 2024 Dutch MotoGP. “In general, the speed was there. I felt comfortable very quickly, especially in the morning. It seems like I haven’t rested for so long, the feeling was there straight away. But in the second practice it was no longer at a high level,” said Marquez as reported by Speedweek, Saturday (29/6/2024).
“In the afternoon, it was a bit confusing. I tried different things and I rode both bikes. The set-up was quite far apart and I had to adapt my riding style. It’s not easy in Assen. Because in the fast corners it’s all about accuracy, you really have to ride very precisely, and that wasn’t always perfect in the afternoon. This was partly due to the stronger wind and also changing direction a few times,” explained the 31-year-old.
One thing is certain, according to him, Pecco is two steps ahead of him. Therefore, the target is to close the existing gap first on the second day which will play the FP2 session and continue with qualifying and sprints.
“Just like that, Pecco is currently two steps ahead here. Maverick Vinales is also very fast, but behind him there is a group of several racers whose speed is almost the same. My goal is to reduce the gap with the front line first,” concluded Marquez.
The 2024 Dutch MotoGP sprint itself is scheduled to take place on Saturday (29/6/2024) at 20.00 WIB. Tomorrow, the main race at the Assen Circuit will be held at 19.00 WIB.
