Oviedo Team “La Güestia” Crowned Fitboxing World Champions and Donates Prize to ALS Charity

Last Saturday, June 8, the final of the Fitboxing World Games was held at the Caja Mágica in Madrid, a sport derived from boxing and officially recognized by the World Council of this sport. On that day, at the Madrid sports venue, sixty-four teams classified after the qualifying phases held in seven countries throughout the first half of the year, competed for the title of World Champions of this discipline.

After a twelve-hour day of competition, divided into group competitions, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals and grand final, the Oviedo team “La Güestia” won the victory, proclaiming itself world champions for the first time in its history. The team, formed by five people from Oviedo four years ago and assigned to the Brooklyn Fitboxing Oviedo Sports Center, achieved this great feat after a year of hard training, improving the ninth place achieved in last year’s championship.

After the final victory, the donation of the 10,000 euros with which the prize endows the champions to the Asturian NGO ELA Principado was staged at the awards ceremony. This decision was made after learning about the case of “Pela”, husband of Paula, a gym partner on the Oviedo team, who was diagnosed with this disease and who, in turn, has created the “Communicate with PELA” initiative, which works for raising awareness among the population, and for disseminating the need to invest in research against ALS.
