Paul George Declines $48.8 Million Player Option, Enters Free Agency

Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul George has decided to decline his player option worth $48.8 million for the 2024-25 season, the reporter from ESPN Adrian Wojnarowski.

This decision will make the nine-time All-Star an unrestricted free agent. He plans to meet with the Clippers, the franchise that owns his Bird rights, and other teams that have enough cap space to sign him, starting Sunday night, Wojnarowski reports.

The Sixers, who have the flexibility to offer him a coveted max contract, have long been considered the Clippers’ biggest threat in the George race. While a recent report suggested the Clippers’ interest in George has not been fully elusive, the Sixers have long been considered the Clippers’ biggest threat in the fight for George. Philly had declined, Chris Haynes, middle Bleacher Reportshares that the 76ers are still expected to make “a significant effort” to convince the forward. Another team with considerable salary cap space that has been mentioned as a possible suitor is the Orlando Magic.

At 34 years old, George maintains his status as one of the best small forwards in the NBA. This last year he played a total of 74 games with the Clippers, in which he averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 33.8 minutes. The Clippers signed their other star, Kawhi Leonard, to a three-year, $152 million contract extension in January and attempted to secure George with a similar deal.

However, the Los Angeles native has not been willing to accept an offer below his expectations, both in terms of the number of years and the total figures. With negotiations at a standstill, George will now explore his options in free agency.
