Paul George Declines Player Option: Will He Leave the Clippers?

We were impatiently awaiting his decision this Saturday, it has just come: Paul George has chosen to decline his player option to become a non-restrictive free agent starting tomorrow evening. Will he leave the Clippers?

Dear Adrian WojnarowskiESPN who announced the news, around 1h15 before the deadline for player options. Paul George therefore chose to give up his $48.7 million option. He is now free of any contract and will interest certain ambitious franchises with a large salary margin. We particularly think of the Sixers.

PAUL GEORGE WILL BE A FREE AGENT!!!

This decision by Paul George to enter the Free Agency market is not necessarily synonymous with departure. PG-13 may indeed very well sign a new contract with the Clippers as a free agent in the coming days. All we know at the time of these lines is that the scenario in which George activates his player option to be traded immediately is now impossible. It will either be an extension at the Clippers (max: four years and $221 million), or the signing of a new contract elsewhere (max: four years and 212 million). A sign-and-trade is still possible but much more complicated to set up with the new CBA.

Sorry for the teams that wanted to make a trade to get Paul George, they will have to go get him in free agency or hope for a crazy scenario that comes out of nowhere.

Will Paul George stay in Los Angeles, he who grew up near the City of Angels and where his entire family now plays? Will he be tempted by another challenge and a team that is ready to offer him the four-year max contract he is looking for? Answer in the coming days.

Paul is eligible to sign a four-year $212M contact with teams that have room.

He’s also eligible to sign up to a four-year $221M contract and negotiate a no trade clause with the Clippers.

Paul cannot sign a five year contract with the Clippers because of the Over 38 rule.
