Referee informs captains about man on roof

As the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed on Sunday, the referee informed Ilkay Gündogan and Kasper Schmeichel about a climber in the roof structure of the stadium. The game then restarted.

It was not until late in the evening that the Dortmund police informed the public that a man had climbed onto the roof structure of the stadium at 10:27 p.m. He was apparently able to get into the completely unsecured areas via the walkable platforms. According to the police, the man is a 21-year-old from Osnabrück. There is no evidence that “the man intended to endanger the stadium guests with his behavior.”

Video shows incident

A video on Platform X apparently shows part of the incident. A masked person with a backpack is moving on the steel structures under the roof of the stadium. Police officers meet them in a corridor and arrest the man. The entire time, the police officers point firearms at the suspect. The scenes were apparently taken after the end of the game, the stadium is already largely empty.

According to the police, a helicopter was also deployed to illuminate the roof. At no point was there any danger to other people. It is unclear how the man was able to get onto the roof structure despite the safety concept. UEFA did not want to comment further on the incident when asked by dpa.
