Poor Scheduling Choices: Halle Tournament Places Zverev’s Match During Germany’s Euro Cup Game

The Halle tournament has not been particularly skillful when it comes to developing the order of play for this Wednesday, placing Zverev, the great star of the tournament and local idol, at the same time that Germany played its Euro Cup match against Hungary (by the way, they won 6-4 and 7-6 against Sonego). The organization had already received criticism for not changing its programming before the magnanimous football event, but it was the last straw for those present that they left the star dish at exactly the same time.

So much so that the tournament was forced to issue a statement throughout the day to apologize for why they had placed Zverev on such a schedule. Some explanations that were not very convincing: “The ATP has decided to schedule Zverev’s match after consulting with the tournament management because half of the draw will be played today. The other half of the draw will be played on Thursday.”

The statement advances in a rather mechanical way, without assessing the emotional channel of the afternoon for the country: “All other players whose matches are scheduled to be played on Center Court completed their first round before Zverev and, therefore, it was scheduled before.” That is to say, there was no room for exception.

Even Halle talks about Zverev’s recovery, even though the player was not particularly excited about playing at the same time as the German team. “Also, Zverev didn’t finish his match yesterday until around seven p.m. and should be given as adequate a recovery period as possible. Furthermore, even if it was scheduled as a third match, there is a possibility that the match would coincide with Germany.”

Said and done, the match continued with the expected schedule and in Halle the goals were celebrated as if it were in the MHPArena. Zverev, of course, found out and celebrated Gundogan’s goal with his arms raised and encouraging the people. A surreal scene that will not occur at Queen’s, where Alcaraz has already asked not to play at the same time as Spain: “The Euro is every four years, now is the time to support and watch the National Team“His match, then, will not have a scene of this caliber: a goal celebrated between nets and lines.
