Portuguese Soares Dias leads Austria – Türkiye

The Portuguese referee Artur Soares Dias will referee the European Championship round of 16 match between Austria and Turkey on Tuesday (9 p.m., live on ServusTV) in Leipzig. The ÖFB team has not had a good experience with the 44-year-old so far – he was in action in the 1-3 home defeat against Croatia in the UEFA Nations League in September 2022 and in the 0-4 home defeat in the World Cup qualifiers in March 2021 against Denmark.

Austrian clubs have also had no success under the leadership of Soares Dias. He refereed Rapid’s 4-0 defeat in February 2019 in the Europa League against Inter Milan, LASK’s 5-0 home defeat in March 2020 in the Europa League against Manchester United, SKN St. Pölten’s 3-2 home defeat in August 2014 in the Europa League qualifiers against PSV Eindhoven and Red Bull Salzburg’s 2-1 defeat in November 2021 in the Champions League against VfL Wolfsburg. Soares Dias also acted as referee in Salzburg’s 2-2 home draw in September 2014 in the Europa League against Celtic Glasgow.

Türkiye also has bad experiences with Soares Dias

The Turks have an even worse record in games involving the Portuguese. All six games involving Turkey under Soares Dias were lost, and three defeats were recorded by the senior national team – the 0-2 defeat at the 2021 European Championship against Wales, as well as the 0-1 home defeat against Hungary in 2020 and the 1-2 home defeat against Russia, both in the Nations League.

During this final round, the referee has already been entrusted with the refereeing of the matches between the Netherlands and Poland (2:1) and England and Denmark (1:1). Most recently, he refereed the Conference League final between Olympiacos Piraeus and Fiorentina (1:0 after extra time) last May. Soares Dias has already refereed at the 2021 European Championship and the 2021 Olympic Games – tattoos with the logos of these two major events adorn his upper arms.
