Gießen (sks). A small transfer coup seems to be looming for the second division basketball team of the Gießen 46ers: Aiden Warnholtz, who was promoted with the Skyliners Frankfurt, could move to the Central Hesse team. In a social media post that has since been deleted, the Skyliners Frankfurt said goodbye to the 24-year-old point guard on Tuesday morning, who played a key role in Frankfurt’s runner-up position and the associated promotion of the banking city’s Bundesliga.

The deleted post said: “His name will forever be linked to the promotion. Thank you for a wild journey and many even wilder things from downtown.” Warnholtz’s three-point percentage was 36 percent last season. In coach Denis Wucherer’s more defensive game, he scored 8.7 points per game and 2.6 assists. If Warnholtz actually came, he would succeed Duane Wilson at the 46ers. It has been known for several weeks that the US guard is likely to leave.

Central Hesse is still keeping a low profile

The Skyliners’ post went on to say that Warnholtz would “continue playing in central Hesse next season (damn, now we’re starting to like them too).” A screenshot of the message, which was deleted shortly afterwards, spread like wildfire on the Gießen 46ers’ fan channels online. The club itself did not want to comment on the leak, but did not deny it either. This and the Skyliners’ post, which was quickly deleted, indicate that the final contract details still need to be clarified.

Warnholtz moved to the Main in the summer of 2023 and, according to information from this newspaper, tried hard (but unsuccessfully) to get a German passport. If the situation has changed and the 46ers sign a German guard of this class in the near future, the transfer would be an even bigger statement.

    Gala performance against Trier

But even with a Canadian passport – Warnholtz played at Carleton University in his home country from 2018 to 2023 – 46ers fans could look forward to a versatile point guard. In the decisive fifth semi-final game against Trier, Warnholtz almost single-handedly shot his team back into the Bundesliga with 25 points. Those familiar with the scene would not have been surprised if Warnholtz had also dared to make the leap to the BBL.
