From the 2025/26 season, a reform of the Women’s DFB Cup will take effect, but in 2024/25 it will be as usual: In the first round, 36 lower-class teams will play for 18 starting places for the second round, in which the twelve existing Bundesliga teams and the two Bundesliga promoted teams will also enter.

Ulrike Ballweg, sports director of talent development for women and girls and former assistant coach of the women’s national team, drew the lots on Thursday afternoon. The ambitious second division newcomer Union Berlin will be playing against their new league rivals FSV Gütersloh 2009. The pairings of Hansa Rostock against VfL Bochum, who have also been promoted to the second division, and Magdeburger FFC against Hamburger SV also have a prominent sound.

First two rounds will be played in regional groups

As usual, the DFB is having the first two rounds played in two regional groups (North and South) for travel reasons. Things will also be interesting in the South: SG Andernach will face SC Sand, both teams found themselves in the top half of the second division table last season. Meanwhile, VfB Stuttgart, which recently underlined its long-term ambitions by signing Mandy Islacker and Kiara Beck, will host 1. FSV Mainz 05. As champions of the Regionalliga Südwest, the Rheinhessen team narrowly missed promotion to the 2nd division.

The games will be played between August 17th and 19th, before the big names around serial winner VfL Wolfsburg will join in the second round (September 7th to 9th). The Wolves triumphed for the tenth time in a row in May and have won 50 cup games in a row.

For the new season, the DFB is doubling the bonuses in the women’s DFB Cup. The association will therefore be paying out a total of just over 1.7 million euros in bonuses, of which the cup winner will receive 150,000 euros and the loser 100,000. All first-round participants will receive 5,000 euros each.
