PSV Strengthens Squad with Barcelona Defender on Free Transfer: Conditions Revealed

It Eindhoven Daily Newspaper reveals the conditions under which PSV strengthened itself with defender on Saturday. The American international comes from FC Barcelona, who already loaned him to the Eindhoven team last season and where the former Ajax player still had a contract until mid-2025. Club watcher Rik Elfrink reports that PSV does not have to pay a transfer fee for Dest.

PSV and Barcelona included a purchase option in Dest’s rental contract, which, according to Elfrink’s information, amounted to eleven million euros. However, the Dutch champion did not wish to transfer that amount for the player who was seriously injured in April and is not expected on the field in the first months of the coming season due to his long-term rehabilitation.

However, Barcelona was very keen to say goodbye to Dest, as the back’s salary will put pressure on the player budget for next season. “The current price is very far below the previous option. In fact, Dest comes to Eindhoven for free and is therefore transfer-free,” Elfrink writes. PSV has therefore agreed to fully take over the salary that the player earned at his previous club. Barcelona could also benefit in the future if PSV were to sell the player: in that case, the Catalans are expected to receive ‘tens of percent’ of the transfer fee, ‘with a maximum amount’, the club watcher writes.

Dest played 37 games in the PSV first team last season and was accurate twice, and he also assisted a teammate’s goal seven times. The Almere-born defender comes from the youth academy of Ajax, which sold him to Barcelona in the summer of 2020. The Catalans also signed Dest for a season at AC Milan prior to his year in Eindhoven.
