Puerto Rico Olympic Committee: 50 Athletes Competing for Paris 2024 Qualification

The Puerto Rico Olympic Committee has nine sports and 50 athletes who are still in competition for qualification for the Olympics, many of whom will learn their Olympic future in the coming weeks.

With 50 days to go until the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Games, the Puerto Rican delegation is made up of 24 athletes, including the women’s 5×5 basketball team.

The nine sports that remain in competition are judo, table tennis, golf, athletics, swimming, skateboarding, men’s 5×5 basketball, beach volleyball and frame shooting, listed the director of the Copur High Performance Department, Fernando Olivero.

Of the nine disciplines, six qualify for the Games based on ranking, while 5×5 basketball, beach volleyball and archery score tickets depending on how they finish in their respective competitions, Olivero specified.

Judo aspires to classify Adrián Gandía and María Pérez by ranking.

“Both are in very favorable positions. There are few competitions left (for ranking points) and we do not expect significant changes in the ranking and for both to obtain those places,” Olivero said.

Judo closes the qualifying ranking on June 23.

Table tennis, which closes the ranking classifications on June 18, aims to register Brian Afanador and Daniel González.

“Today they are both inside,” Olivero said.

It would be the first Olympics for González.

Rafa Campos is the contender for golf, which closes the qualification period on June 17.

Swimming has Kristen Romano, Yeziel Morales and Xavier Ruiz aspiring for places for the universal positions, if they do not make the minimum marks at the close of classifications on July 3, Olivero said.

Skateboard, for its part, closes registration on June 23 and the athlete Steven Piñero is the only one who aspires to qualify.

And athletics has up to 23 Puerto Ricans who aspire to sign up for Paris 2024, which closes registration on June 30.

“These next two weeks are decisive, especially for athletics, where there are many competitions and where there can be many changes in the classifications,” Olivero said.

Until today, athletics has Grace Claxton, Gabby Scott Puig, Luis Joel Castro, Jerome Vega and Rachelle de Orbeta in the qualifying positions. Naturally, valllista Jasmine Camacho Quinn and decalista Ayden Owens Delerme already have their ticket to Paris 2024 secured.

“Our work with the national federations is that our athletes arrive at these events in the best possible conditions. We are not skimping on anything so that they can achieve those Olympic qualifications,” Olivero said about the policy with the nine federations that is maintained in the classification process.

Archery will send two athletes to the final qualifier, which will be held on June 15 and 16 in Turkey. The athletes are Nilka Cotto and Adrián Muñoz.

Next, two couples seek qualifications in beach volleyball for the regional Pre-Olympic that will be held in Mexico from June 19 to 25. The couples are María González-Alanis Navas and Arnaldo Torres-William Rivera.

Finally, basketball is the host of the Pre-Olympic Championship in July, which will be held at the Puerto Rico Coliseum. José Miguel Agrelot, if he achieves the pass, would qualify 12 athletes.
