Quite a disaster, Hamilton says about his shootout – F1sport.cz

Lewis Hamilton is not satisfied with the shootout that determined the order at the start of the sprint.

George Russell finished fourth in the shootout, Hamilton two places lower. He lost 0.584 seconds to Verstappen on the short Red Bull Ring.

“I wasn’t in the mix at all the whole shootout,” Hamilton said. “From my point of view, it was pretty disastrous.”

“What to say about that? I felt good in training. Overall, I had a good feeling about the car. I don’t think we had the pace to be on pole, but it was very bad laps. Every single one of them.’

Hamilton wants to focus on qualifying and the race rather than the sprint. He doesn’t expect to make much progress tomorrow.

“It’s not a great overtaking here, but we’ll give it our all. It’s not usually such a busy race, so we’re mainly focused on getting a better qualifying session tomorrow.”

Russell is happier

George Russell finished fourth, 0.368 seconds off Verstappen and not far from beating Piastri in third.

“Honestly, the soft tires were really good and my bike was really strong,” said Russell.

“I was quite surprised by the gap, but I think I overdid it in my opening laps.”

“I took too much life out of the tires on the opening lap and I think I probably robbed them of top grip. That’s kind of the only explanation I have at this point because the round was good, probably my best round in the shootout, but it was still quite a step back. But fourth place is still a great position for tomorrow’s fight.”

“Tomorrow in the sprint I will definitely fight for the podium, but the most important thing is of course the main race. It’s confirmation that we’re in the mix. At the moment we’re probably a bit ahead of Ferrari and a bit behind McLaren.”
