Raptors Retain Bruce Brown for 23 Million, Setting Up Potential Trade

While the deadline for player/team options is set for tomorrow, the Raptors have made their choice regarding Bruce Brown, potential free agent.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski ofESPNthe Toronto franchise has decided to activate its team option on Brown, who therefore remains under contract with the Raptors for an additional year for 23 million dollars.

Brown’s agents Ty Sullivan and Steven Heumann of @CAA_Basketball negotiated the 2-year, $45M deal with Indiana before it landed in the Pascal Siakam trade. Raps picking up option gets Brown deal’s full value and now it likely becomes part of a trade this summer or during season.

This choice does not mean that Bruce Brown is part of the new Raptors project, quite the contrary.

If BB theoretically stays in Canada for another year, he probably won’t make it past February. By activating this team option at 23 million, the Dinos keep their hand on their player to make him a bargaining chip. A final year of contract with such a salary is ideal in terms of setting up a transfer. NBA champion in 2023 and versatile player, Bruce Brown could well interest people in the weeks and months to come.

In the event that the Raptors had declined their team option on Bruce Brown, the latter would probably have left Canada without compensation. And Toronto didn’t want that, even if it would have allowed the Canadian team to make some savings in the short term.

Interesting little move from the Raptors, who therefore retain Bruce Brown and the attractiveness he represents on the transfer market.

See you in a few months (weeks?) to send it elsewhere for nice assets.
