A year ago, Rasta Vechta was still playing in the second basketball league. Next season, the surprise newcomer from the Easycredit BBL will start in the Champions League!
The basketball fairytale was announced by the host association FIBA after a meeting in Mies on Lake Geneva. In addition, the Niners Chemnitz and the Würzburg Baskets have qualified for the third-highest European competition for the first time. A total of 28 teams will move directly into the group phase (starting October 1).

“Participation is a reward for our performance over the last few years and takes us a step further as a club,” says Vechta’s sporting director Gerrit Kersten-Thiele. “The European Cup games are a bonus, but we don’t just want to enjoy them. We want to send a competitive team into the race and also make a good impression internationally.”
At the same time, Kersten-Thiele emphasises: “Of course, our focus in the coming season is to secure our place in the Easycredit BBL again.”
32 teams will start in the Champions League – initially in eight groups of four. The draw will take place on June 26th at 11 a.m. (live on YouTube). In addition to the 28 seeded representatives, 24 other teams have the chance to play their way into the competition in mid-September as winners of one of the four qualifying tournaments. The seventh-placed Telekom Baskets Bonn from the BBL are also in the running.

Already on Monday, the privately organized Euroleague (FC Bayern Munich, Alba Berlin) and its substructure, the EuroCup (Ratiopharm Ulm, Veolia Towers Hamburg), announced their participants.
This means that only the two German participants are missing from the fourth European competition – the FIBA Europe Cup, which Chemnitz won this season.
This means that in the autumn, ten of the 18 teams from the BBL could be represented internationally!
