RB Leipzig Confirms Marcel Schäfer as Successor for Sports Director Role

Everything is clear! Nine months after his dismissal, RB Leipzig has a successor for Max Eberl (50/now Bayern): preferred candidate Marcel Schäfer (40) will be the sports director. His contract runs until 2028.

“We are convinced that with his spirit, his experience and his skills he fits in very well with RB Leipzig,” says Supervisory Board Chairman Oliver Mintzlaff (48).

And further: “Our club stands for a clear philosophy and the ambition to always want to develop further. We pursue ambitious goals and are sure that Marcel, with his ideas and concepts, will help us to consistently continue on our successful path.”

Schäfer was suspended as managing director in Wolfsburg in April after he informed those in charge that he wanted to leave the club. Because his contract, which runs until 2026, was recently suspended, RB has to pay a transfer fee.

After tough negotiations between the supervisory board bosses Frank Witter (65) and Mintzlaff, both are said to have agreed on a sum of 1.5 million euros, according to BILD information.

Schäfer is finally confirmed! The former national player (8 international matches) starts his new job on August 1st – and it will take him straight to the USA. From July 28th to August 4th, RB Leipzig will set up its training camp on the east coast. Schäfer will travel there and introduce himself officially for the first time.

The new sports boss: “Our common goal is for this top club to continue to grow, be as successful as possible and at the same time remain one of the first port of call for young top talents in Europe. I am very much looking forward to being able to help write the next chapters of the RB Leipzig story, which has been so extraordinary so far.”

Of course: The majority of the squad should be in place by the time Schäfer starts. This summer, sporting director Rouven Schröder (48), coach Marco Rose (47) and the management will be taking care of it, supported by Red Bull football boss Mario Gomez (38) and supervisory board member Mintzlaff.

Managing Director Johann Plenge (39): “Marcel finds a highly ambitious team in our sports director Rouven Schröder and his staff, who have done a great job in the past weeks and months. The anticipation of starting the new season together is accordingly great!”

Dane becomes Schäfer’s successor

Schäfer is said to have been consulted on the decisions, but he only really got going after he took office – and on an equal footing with Schröder, even though Schäfer is his superior in purely hierarchical terms as managing director. After the Eberl misunderstanding, the RB bosses are deliberately relying on team players in the sporting leadership rather than big names.

By the way: Schäfer’s successor has now been decided in Wolfsburg too. Peter Christiansen (49) from FC Copenhagen will be the new sports director and is to be officially introduced in the middle of the week.

VfL is expected to pay a transfer fee of between 1.5 and 2 million euros for the Dane.
