Real has a record 15th triumph in the Champions League. Dortmund was betrayed in the final by a fly

Real Madrid players beat Dortmund 2-0 in the Champions League final and claimed their fifteenth triumph in the competition, improving their own record. The match played in London’s Wembley was decided by goals in the 74th and 83rd minutes of Dani Carvajal and Vinícius Júnior.

The “White Ballet” won the ninth final in the modern history of the LM, to which it advanced; the last time he failed with Liverpool was in 1981 in the UEFA Champions League.

Borussia failed to follow up on their only triumph in the Champions League from 1997. They also lost the final at Wembley 11 years ago to German rival Bayern Munich.

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti also improved his own record, as he is the most successful coach in history with five Champions League triumphs. With Real he dominated the competition for the third time, he did it twice with AC Milan, with whom he also won twice as a player. With their sixth triumph in the competition, Luka Modrič and Carvajal equaled the previous record holder and “White Ballet” legend Pac Gent.

The duel was extraordinary for the midfielders Bellingham, Reus and Kroos. The first-named came to Madrid before the current season from Borussia.

“It’s the best night of my life. The season can be described as perfect. I couldn’t have dreamed it better. It’s a tremendous team effort,” Bellingham was quoted as saying by the UEFA website.

His former teammate Reus, who celebrated his 35th birthday on Friday, said goodbye to Dortmund after 12 years after the final. He jumped into the game in the 72nd minute. Thirty-four-year-old Kroos played his last duel at club level, he will end his career after the summer European Championship.

The kickoff was preceded by a performance by rocker Lenny Kravitz. The start of the match was interrupted by two fans who invaded the pitch and then the game was on. Borussia was especially threatening in the first half.

In the 21st minute, Hummels found Adeyemi behind Real’s defence, who beat goalkeeper Courtois, but he got out of the corner and missed the finish. Subsequently, Maatsen found Füllkrug, who hit the post in the fall. Courtois deflected Adeyemi’s shot and Füllkrug’s save from a difficult position was missed. Sabitzer’s leaping attempt from distance was headed for a corner by the Real goalkeeper.

“I have to be honest, Dortmund were better in the first half. They could have led by two or three goals,” Bellingham said.

After switching sides, Kobel pulled away Kroos’ free-kick. At the opposite end, Courtois stepped in to meet Füllkrug’s header after Adeyemi’s cross. Real began to increase the pressure and opened the scoring in the 74th minute. Carvajal ran onto Kroos’ cross from a corner kick and scored with his head. He scored in the LM for the first time since the 2015/16 season.

Bellingham could have added insurance, but stopper Schlotterbeck missed his shot just wide of the goal. Even Kroos and Camavinga failed, but Vinícius Júnior did. BVB defender Maatsen played straight to Bellingham and he passed to the Brazilian striker, who made no mistake. With six goals, he became the best scorer of the team in this LM season. Füllkrug still got the ball into the net on the other side, but his joy at the contact goal was thwarted by offside.

“Now we are disappointed, which is normal after a match in which we had such a chance. Against Real Madrid, you probably don’t create so many chances. But we had them and we should have made more of them. But it is a hundred percent success that we they got to the finals. We proved that we can play at a top international level,” said Kobel.
