Joselu Mato is already a footballer for Al-Gharafa. One day after exercising the purchase option that it had by paying Espanyol the 1.5 million euros that it stipulated, Real Madrid made official this Friday the agreement reached with the Qatari entity for the forward to be its new reference.
The striker, immersed in Euro 2024 with the Spanish national team, will land at the Doha-based club after Real Madrid acted as facilitator of the operation in view of the obstacles that Espanyol could put in its way. If the Whites had not executed the option they had to acquire his services before June 30, the Espanyol club would have claimed a significantly higher amount from Al-Gharafa, since the clause that Joselu signed when he arrived at the white-and-blue club was higher than the 1.5 million euros that his transfer to Real Madrid cost him.
After a campaign in which he offered an excellent performance for a player who played just over 2,000 minutes – 18 goals and three assists – Joselu had received an offer from Real Madrid to continue for another season at the Santiago Bernabéu, which he viewed favourably. But the succulent offer presented by Al-Gharafa changed the Galician’s plans.
8.5 million a year
At 34 years of age, and once his participation in the European Championship is over, Joselu will head to Qatari football, where he will receive 8.5 million euros for each of the two years he will sign with Al-Gharafa. The contract could be extended for another year. These figures are very far from those that Real Madrid could offer him, who took action to smooth his exit in gratitude for the services rendered.
“Real Madrid thanks Joselu for his professionalism and his Madridism, and shows all its affection to him and his family, to whom it wishes the best of luck in this new stage of their lives,” reads the statement distributed by the Chamartín club. after remembering some of the most notable episodes in the career of a footballer who joined La Fábrica in 2010 at the age of 20 and joined Castilla, where he played two seasons and participated in the promotion to the Second Division in the 2011-12 campaign. He would later play for a series of teams in different countries, before returning last summer to Real Madrid on loan from Espanyol.
Last season, Joselu won the hearts of Real Madrid fans by playing 49 games, scoring 18 goals and winning three titles: a Champions League, a La Liga and a Spanish Super Cup. Unforgettable is the supersonic double he scored against Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals and which sealed his ticket to the final at Wembley.
