The Red Devils have ended the painful loss match against Slovakia. The evaluation with and by technical director Frank Vercauteren (67) was quite positive despite the 0-1 defeat. The tactical debriefing was sufficient to put all comments – positive and negative – on the table. On to Romania.

The Belgians had to deal with the hangover against Slovakia for a while. The Red Devils camp naturally reflected on the unexpected defeat. National coach Domenico Tedesco has his rituals for this. The German coach re-examined the match a number of times and, if possible, re-examined certain phases of the match even more. Tedesco then sat down with his technical staff to discuss all his observations and to discuss how certain things could be refined during training.

Accept criticism

The national coach was also in Germany with Frankie Vercauteren. The technical director of the football association acts as a tactical sounding board for Tedesco and also made his analysis of the game. Vercauteren spoke to the media on Wednesday and was relaxed. The 0-1 defeat was a disappointment, but Vercauteren indicated that the general balance and feeling remained positive. The Devils had many chances against Slovakia, he understood Tedesco’s approach and substitutions and felt hunger among the players…

Frank Vercauteren is not the man who immediately starts having individual conversations with the Devils after such a loss. He prefers to speak face-to-face with a player before the match or after the match has been over for a while. Sometimes 15 minutes, sometimes 30 seconds… Although he had not yet sat apart with, say, Romelu Lukaku.

A special group discussion was also not considered necessary. What was important was that the usual tactical debriefing with the players was organized before the start of the day off on Wednesday. There, Domenico Tedesco traditionally showed images to his Devils and everyone could submit their comments. The Red Devils do not hold back. They mention what was good, but also express personal criticism of each other if necessary. The truth between top professional players should not be obscured.

Clear your mind

The general tenor is that the Red Devils are not worried (yet). The tension has increased, but the belief that Belgium will beat Romania on Saturday is still strong. The Slovakia switch has been turned and a potential elimination is not being considered. Domenico Tedesco will also discuss his vision with Vercauteren in the following days, but he will at most offer tactical options. It is the national coach who makes the sporting decisions.

The players mainly cleared their heads on Wednesday during a completely free day in Germany. Not training for a while can also be beneficial. The focus will soon be on Romania.
