Robert Andrich scores the 1-0 for Germany against Switzerland – but the referee disallows the goal after the video referee is called in. Rightly so? What happened? There is also bad news for a German defender.

The supposed opening goal of the German national football team against Switzerland has been withdrawn after reviewing the video evidence. After Robert Andrich’s goal (17th minute), referee Daniele Orsato from Italy reviewed a scene on Sunday evening that had preceded the long-range shot. Jamal Musiala hit the Swiss player Michel Aebischer.

Orsato went to the monitor himself and took the goal back. “That was a correct takeback of the goal. Musiala landed a relatively clear hit on the ankle. The attack phase was not over yet, so it can still be checked. Unfortunately, there is no room for maneuver because it is too clear a hit,” said referee Patrick Ittrich on MagentaTV.

Former referee Lutz Wagner saw it similarly. “That doesn’t change the Swiss player’s pass. But it was definitely contact. He disallowed the goal because for him Musiala’s contact with the opponent was the deciding factor,” Wagner said in explanation on ARD. At halftime, Bastian Schweinsteiger analyzed the game as an expert on ARD: “In the past, without VAR, no one would have seen it. Unfortunately, it’s a foul and we have to accept it.”

Meanwhile, Jonathan Tah received his second yellow card of the tournament against Switzerland and is now banned from the national football team’s round of 16. The Leverkusen player was cautioned in the 38th minute by referee Daniele Orsato from Italy for a foul on Breel Embolo.

Tah missing in the round of 16

He was also shown a yellow card for a foul at the start of the tournament against Scotland. In addition to Tah, Robert Andrich, Antonio Rüdiger and Maximilian Mittelstädt also went into the match in Frankfurt with previous injuries. Before the Switzerland match, national coach Julian Nagelsmann stressed that he would not take any impending suspensions into account when making his line-up. In the round of 16 on Saturday, whose opponent will be decided by Tuesday evening at the latest, Tah could be replaced by Nico Schlotterbeck or Waldemar Anton.

At the European Championships, players must sit out one match after receiving their second yellow card and then again after receiving their fourth. Individual cautions are cancelled after the quarter-finals, so that no player can miss the final because of a yellow card suspension.

Manuel Neuer has also taken sole lead in the record list of European Championship goalkeepers thanks to his appearance for the national team. The FC Bayern Munich goalkeeper has overtaken the previous leader Gianluigi Buffon from Italy with his 18th appearance. In the DFB’s list of the best European Championships, the 38-year-old is also level with his former club colleague Bastian Schweinsteiger, who played 18 times for Germany in four European Championship finals between 2004 and 2016.

In terms of the number of international matches, Neuer has overtaken Schweinsteiger (121) with his 122nd appearance. He is now in sole fifth place behind Lothar Matthäus (150), Miroslav Klose (137) and Lukas Podolski and Thomas Müller (130 each).
