With the European Championships the Giulio Campanati Awardtraditionally assigned to best referee of the competition. Now in its sixth edition, the initiative is promoted by the “Amici di Giulio Campanati” Association together with the AIA Section “Giulio Campanati-Umberto Meazza” and with the patronage of the FIGC. The initiative, born in memory of the “Presidentissimo Campanati”, who, first as match director and then as a football manager at national and international level, worked to increase and strengthen the refereeing movement, aims to recognize the commitment and dedication of the 23rd man on the pitch. President of the AIA for 18 years and UEFA and FIFA designator from ’68 to ’92, Campanati has always defended the role of the referee, proving himself to be an attentive and severe observer, but reserving advice and constructive criticism of the work of his colleagues in the appropriate places. It is on the basis of this attitude that the Giulio Campanati Award wants to highlight the merit and not the errors of the referees on the pitch.

The winner will be decided by a quality jury made up of journalists (including ours Lorenzo Fontani) and sports managers, representatives of the refereeing world and great referees of the past, responsible for carefully evaluating the directions of all the matches played during Euro 2024. At the end of the competition each juror will draw up a ranking of the three referees who stood out the most from a technical, behavioral and physical-athletic point of view. The referee who collects the most preferences will win the Prize, awarded in 2014 and 2016 to the Italian Nicola Rizzolion the occasion of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia to the Argentine Nestor Pitana and for the 2020 European Championships the Dutch way Bijorn Kuiperswhile the last edition of the World Cup in Qatar was won by the Italian referee Daniele Orsato. The awards ceremony will be held in autumn this year.
