Remembering Baseball Legend Willie Mays: A True Icon of the Game

Few Major League players were more emblematic than Willie Mays, who is even part of the Venezuelan collective dialect with the famous phrase “Don’t act like Willie Mays.” For this reason, the news that was given on June 18, when his death was announced at 93 years of age, is very painful.

Likewise, the former outfielder was affectionately known as The Say Hey Kid, a true baseball legend. Born on May 6, 1931 in Westfield, Alabama, Mays debuted in Major League Baseball with the New York Giants in 1951. His career spanned more than two decades, during which time he proved to be one of the most complete and versatile players in the history of sport.

Mays was a two-time MVP, 24-time All-Star, 12-time Gold Glove winner and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His ability on the field, both defensively and offensively, made him a baseball icon.

His famous play known as “The Catch”, made during the 1954 World Series, is emblematic as one of the best and most spectacular catches in baseball history. In honor of that iconic moment, the World Series MVP Award was named in his honor in 2017.
