Remembering Tomoo Wakao: A Baseball Legend’s Legacy

Tomoo Wako, a pitcher with 121 wins in professional baseball for the Hanshin Tigers and other teams, and a long-time coach for many teams, died of liver cancer on the 3rd at a hospital in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture. He was 87 years old. He was born in Miyagi Prefecture. The funeral and farewell ceremony will be held on the 8th at 1:15 pm at Furuya Shikiten Funabashi Saien, 2-9-1 Ichiba, Funabashi City. The chief mourner is his wife Michiko.

He joined the Mainichi (now Lotte) in 1956 from Tohoku High School in Miyagi Prefecture, and contributed to the team’s league championship in 1960 with 13 wins when the team was still with Daiei. He transferred to Hanshin in 1964 and participated in the Japan Series. He also played for Hiroshima, and retired in 1976. He coached for Hanshin and Lotte, among others.

His career record is 121 wins, 120 losses, 2 saves, and an ERA of 2.71 in 628 games pitched.
