Robert Bloom Withdraws from 2021 NBA Draft: Explaining His Decision and Future Plans

The 18-year-old Bloom had applied for the NBA draft, which will take place on June 26 (first round) and 27 (second round) of this year. However, almost a month before the draft ceremony, Bloom decided in favor of removing his name from the list of draft candidates.

Robert Bloom explains his decision to opt out of the NBA draft

“During the season, I did quite well. The agent informed me that there was an opportunity to apply for the NBA draft. I used that opportunity, but applying for the draft was for the purpose of not going all the way this year. I still have several years when I can apply,” said the basketball player.

This year’s NBA draft is called among experts one of the weakest of the last ten years. Bloom believes that his strongest season could be the next one, after which a full-fledged application for the NBA draft could follow.

“I’ll definitely try again next year,” Bloom added.

Applying for the NBA draft with the intention of attracting wider attention among young basketball players is a very popular practice. Blum also does not hide that he applied for the draft this year with the aim of gaining more attention in the international basketball environment. Bloom also successfully achieved this.

“There were a couple [NBA] teams that showed interest. Questions were addressed to the agent. There was something, yes,” confirmed the player.

In the past season, Blums represented “VEF Rīga” and was also recognized as the best rookie of the year in Latvian basketball. The young basketball player kept his plans for the next season a secret.

“For now, I’m focusing on recovery after the season. Now I’m already starting summer work to get better. Very soon you will be able to find out everything, but for now there is still uncertainty. There are several options. Thoughts are arising,” said the young basketball player at the end of the conversation.

Blum averaged 12 points, 1.5 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game in the Latvian and Estonian Basketball League (LIBL) season. In the match against “Kalev/SNABB” Tallinn on January 21 of this year, Blum scored 41 points, which is the record of the past season and the best result in the history of the tournament.
