Mexico, June 3.- At 41 years old, Dominican baseball player Robinson Canó does not see retirement close, although he has already thought that, when he arrives, he will follow in the footsteps of his compatriot Omar Minaya, who has been a manager in several Major League teams. Leagues and is an operations advisor for the New York Yankees.

«I would like to do what Minaya does or better. “Working in the offices, being an advisor or assistant to an owner or manager,” the second baseman of the Red Devils of the Mexican Baseball League explained to EFE.

The 2009 World Series champion with the Yankees already had his first taste of working in management; Last year he became one of the shareholders of Baseball United, the first professional baseball league in the Middle East and South Asia.

In that league, Canó is not only one of the owners, but he was a player in the first exhibition games in 2023 and in 2024 he aims to play for one of the teams.

«In the future I would like to watch the game in the stands and give advice so that the league grows. It is a competition that is just beginning, but I have learned that everything in life has a process and you have to give it your time. “This is another opportunity for players who do not have jobs in the Major Leagues,” added the native of San Pedro de Macorís.

Canó spent 17 seasons in the Majors, during which time he accumulated 335 home runs, drove in 1,306 runs and had a batting average of .301.

After a career that many consider Hall of Fame, Canó left the Big League in 2022, amid two suspensions for doping, the last of which banned him from playing the 2021 campaign.

That led him to play in the Dominican league, which he helped win two Caribbean Series titles, and in which he is one of the figures of the Estrellas Orientales.

Becoming a legend of Dominican baseball, he signed this year with the Red Devils, the most successful in the Mexican Baseball League with 16 titles.

Since his arrival, both Canó and directors of the Scarlets have assured that money was not the reason for the second baseman to arrive in Mexico, but rather the desire to give the Reds their first title since 2014.

“What keeps me active at 41 years old is the love for baseball, hard, constant work, I learned it early in my career and that’s what I would tell everyone, when you work you only see good results,” said Canó.
