Romelu Lukaku seemingly dropped a hint regarding a possible move to Antonio Conte’s Napoli this summer, having returned to Chelsea following his loan spell with Roma.
The 31-year-old Belgian striker spent the 2023-24 campaign with the Giallorossi, where he showed a number of positives under both Jose Mourinho and Daniele De Rossi, scoring 21 goals and providing four assists across 47 matches.
Lukaku has now returned to Chelsea following the conclusion of his year-long loan at Roma. The Blues are not planning to keep the striker and are hoping to shift him on a definitive transfer this summer, with Milan and Napoli both interested in a move.
Speaking to Het Laatse Nieuws, Lukaku was first asked about the lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia last year.
“It was really intense at that time. For two weeks. For two days in a row, I thought: ‘Yes, I’m going there’, ‘No, I’m not going there’. They all went to Saudi Arabia only after the days when I could’ve signed. Let’s say I was scared.”
The Belgian striker kept the door open for a possible move to Saudi Arabia in the future.
“Saudi Arabia wouldn’t stop me. The level will only increase. And it will reach a much higher level than many think. More and more footballers will look to play there.
“Also due to the way in which the fans live football. The infrastructure still needs to be improved, but all the big European top clubs know it, ‘Saudi Arabia are already coming’. You see it in boxing, golf, Formula One.”
Lukaku touched on his plans to return to Anderlecht one day.
“It will happen. And much sooner than many think. I left Belgium when I was 18, I miss my mother and my children.”
He spoke about his plans for the future.
“In my head, I already understand it. I know what will happen. A lot of people like to talk, maybe because I don’t have an official agent. But I will decide. I have control of my situation.
“I will make a choice and once I explain it, everyone will agree with me. Whenever I have decided to stay or go somewhere, it turned out to be the right choice due to some factors.”
Lukaku commented on the importance of his relationship with a coach.
“My relationship with the coach. It’s like a relationship with a woman. If it doesn’t work anymore, why stay together?”
Finally, Lukaku confirmed his favourite coach to work with, hinting at the Napoli move.
