There is less and less left to have the definitive picture of the round of 16. From these it will also be possible to hypothesize the probable quarter-finals and semi-finals
Time for verdicts at Euro 2024, which is now approaching the start of the knockout phase. All the round of 16 matches will be decided by Wednesday 26 June; the first official pairing to have filled both boxes of the scoreboard was Switzerland-Italy. Then Denmark, who, as second in Group C, will face Germany. England, Spain, France, Portugal and Austria have yet to find out their respective opponents.
Who qualifies for the round of 16
The top two national teams in each group and the four best third-placed teams from the six groups qualify for the round of 16. To be included in the group of the latter qualified, 7 criteria are taken into consideration in this order of relevance:
- number of points
- goal difference
- number of goals scored
- number of victories
- total disciplinary score based only on warnings and expulsions received in all group matches (direct expulsion = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for double yellow card = 3 points)
- position in the general ranking of the European qualifiers. If Germany (host nation) is involved, a draw will take place.
- Once the four best third-placed teams have been determined, article 21.05 of the regulations explains how they are assigned to their respective matches. Assignment to each round of 16 match can only be made when all four teams are known.
