Round of 16 of the European Football Championship: England struggles against Slovakia into the European Championship quarter-finals

England has struggled to reach the quarter-finals of the European Championship. The English won their match against Slovakia 2-1 after extra time. In the quarter-finals next Saturday in Düsseldorf, England will face Switzerland.

The co-favorites only managed to beat Slovakia in extra time. Jude Bellingham (90th+5) and Harry Kane (91st) from Bayern Munich scored for England. Ivan Schranz had put Slovakia in the lead in the 25th minute, which lasted well into injury time.

In the first half, the English hardly had any chances to score. Apart from a long-range shot from Kieran Trippier (10th minute) that went way over the goal, there were hardly any shots on goal for the Three Lions. Lukas Haraslin (6th/12th minute) had two chances to take the lead for the Slovakians early in the game, but it was Ivan Schranz who finally put his team in the lead in the 25th minute. The underdogs went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after the break, Phil Foden put the ball in the Slovakian goal. But the supposed equaliser did not count, as Foden was offside. Five minutes later, Slovakia missed the chance to extend their lead. David Strelec’s long-range shot (55′) went just wide of the goal.

As the Slovakians ran out of energy as the game progressed, the English grew stronger. After two missed equalizing chances by Kane (78th) and Declan Rice (81st), Bellingham finally equalized with a spectacular overhead kick just before the end of stoppage time. This meant that the game went into extra time, and only a minute had been played when Harry Kane scored the decisive goal.
