Round of 16 of the European Football Championship: Spain beats Georgia and faces Germany in the quarter-finals

Spain – Georgia 4:1 (1:1)

Spain won the European Championship round of 16 against Georgia 4-1 and is now Germany’s opponent in the quarter-finals. In front of around 42,000 fans in Cologne, Spain had the initiative throughout the game and was ultimately superior in terms of football.

Georgia, on the other hand, defended consistently with all means and occasionally tried to relieve the pressure with counterattacks. In the 18th minute of the game, they managed to do so on the right: Otar Kakabadze sprinted to a free cross, which was so sharp that Spain’s Robin Le Normand put the ball into his own goal under pressure. Georgia’s goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili held on to the surprising lead several times until half-time. But then Rodri (39th) equalized with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.

After the break, the balance of power remained largely equal, but Georgia almost caused a surprise again. Chwitscha Kwarazchelia saw Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón standing far in front of the goal and tried his luck from his own half – the ball flew about half a meter past the goal. A little later, Lamine Yamal was free to cross on the other side, Fabián Ruiz (51′) headed in from close range and turned the game around for Spain. Georgia continued to try to counterattack, but in doing so opened up space for the next goal: Nico Williams was given plenty of space on the left and shot powerfully under the crossbar (75′). Shortly afterwards, Dani Olmo (83′) scored the final goal.

The quarter-final match between Germany and Spain will take place on July 5 at 6 p.m. in Stuttgart.
