Rune-Mouratoglou Partnership Prevails: Boris Becker’s Short-Lived Coaching Stint with Holger Rune

This player-coach relationship did not last long: In the final stretch of the last tennis season, Boris Becker was supposed to help the Danish youngster Holger Rune (21) back on track after a poor form.

But after only four months, the duo ended their collaboration in February after the Australian Open.

Holger Rune reacts cheekily to Becker question

Shortly afterwards, Rune returned to Frenchman Patrick Mouratoglou (54), who coaches several world-class professionals in his academy and had previously led Rune to fourth place in the world rankings.

“Sometimes you have to try a lot of things to find out what works for you – and what doesn’t,” wrote Rune, who, however, has not yet been able to consistently return to his old form under Mouratoglou.

Before the third Grand Slam tournament, his ex-coach Becker became confused. “Quick question,” the German tennis legend wrote on Sunday (June 30, 2024) on X. “I see Patrick Mouratoglou in London, but NOT together with Holger Rune in Wimbledon. They still work together?!?”

The answer from Rune, who was tagged in the post, was not long in coming. “It’s really weird that you didn’t ask me that directly. After all, we text about other things too,” wrote Rune.

Rune continued: “The answer to your question is: Yes, we work together. We divide the tournaments as we planned.” In addition to Mouratoglou, Rune is also coached by his compatriot and youth coach Kenneth Carlsen (51).

Rune is known for his direct and unfiltered style on social media and manages his accounts himself. Many fans find his sometimes cheeky behavior refreshing.

“Holger, please never change. You always deliver content,” cheered a tennis fan on X. “Love this Scandinavian directness. Game, set and match Holger,” said another comment. Another user, however, would have liked “a respectful response to a former top player.”

In the first round at Wimbledon, the Dane, currently number 15 in the world rankings, will face South Korean Kwon Soon-woo (26). Last year, Runde made it to the quarterfinals on the hallowed turf.
