Russia Considers Boycott of Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Judo Team Taking Stand

Less than a month before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Russia I would be thinking about boycott this sporting event.

Tensions regarding the beginning and development of the Olympic tournament continue, since what was thought to happen from the beginning could happen: Russia boycotting Paris 2024.

How would you do it? The answer is: judo. It was the Russian Judo Federation that announced on Friday evening that it would not send its athletes to the next Olympic Games due to the “humiliating conditions” imposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

17 Russian judokas obtained enough points to compete in Paris 2024, but only 14 of them could be accepted and invited by the Committee, because there can only be one athlete per country in each of the judo categories.

Humiliating conditions: Russia

However, the IOC, in its update of the invitation lists, only authorized four of them – of the 14 – to participate in the Paris Games, a decision that the Russian Judo Federation criticized, while reporting that it would not send to their athletes.

“The Russian national judo team will not accept these humiliating conditions,” the organization said, adding that “these actions by the IOC undermine the credibility of the Olympic movement” and “destroy the reputation of the Games as the most important sporting event in the world.”

And, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, various world sports organizations banned Russian athletes and teams from participating in sporting events. Among them the IOC, who initially decided that the athletes would not be in the Paris Olympic Games.

However, some time later, the IOC changed its mind, but did so under strict rules. Russian and Belarusian athletes would only be in Paris 2024 by invitation and provided they had qualified for the Games; in addition, they would be at the sporting event under a neutral flag and would not march in the opening ceremony.

Added to the above is a strict investigation where only Russians and Belarusians who have not supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine would be accepted.

The IOC’s strict rules came under fire from Russia, which called them “humiliating” and “discriminatory.”
