The judo competitions at the Olympic Games in Paris will take place without Russian athletes.

The Russian Judo Federation has decided not to send a representative to the Olympic Games in Paris (26 July to 11 August), citing the “humiliating conditions” of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

On Friday, the IOC admitted only four of 17 athletes from Russia who were qualified in 14 weight classes to the Games in France as “neutral athletes”. The Russians described their subsequent action as a “boycott” in an official statement.

“All progressive people understand that the judo competitions at the Games will be incomplete without Russian athletes and the champions will not receive the satisfaction of winning a weakened Olympic tournament,” the Russian Federation further stated.

Strict admission criteria for Russian athletes

Because of their home countries’ war of aggression against Ukraine, athletes from Russia and Belarus can only compete in Paris as neutral individual athletes without using any state symbols. In addition to sporting qualifications, additional requirements include positive reviews by the respective world associations and the IOC that the candidates do not “actively” support the war and have no connection to their country’s military.

The admission criteria immediately attracted the attention of the Russian government after they were announced by the IOC. President Vladimir Putin also made serious accusations against IOC President Thomas Bach for the allegedly unfair treatment of athletes from Russia.

So far, the Ringe organization has admitted 43 athletes from the two aggressor countries to the Olympic competitions, including the judoka, after completing the examination processes. Even before the Russian Judo Association’s cancellation, individual Olympic candidates from Russia, such as professional cyclist Alexander Vlasov from the German Red Bull Bora-hansgrohe team, had announced that they would not be competing in Paris, despite an invitation from the IOC to France.
