Russian Judo Federation Withdraws Athletes from 2024 Paris Games Due to IOC Restrictions

The Russian Judo Federation (RJF) will not send its athletes to the 2024 Paris Games after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that only four Russians are authorized to compete in that discipline, according to an official statement, published on the Russian federation website.

“Until the last moment we trusted that common sense and the desire to celebrate the Olympic Games complete with the participation of the strongest athletes, including those from Russia and Belarus, prevailed over political intrigues,” the note says.

Nevertheless, These hopes were not fulfilled, he adds.

“Of the seventeen judokas who qualified for the Olympic Games, the IOC only allowed four of them to participate. The remaining athletes would be forced to stay at home,” the FJR said.

In this situation, The leadership of the federation made the “unanimous” decision not to accept the “humiliating conditions” of the IOC and not participate in the Paris Games with the composition proposed by the Olympic Committee officials.

“Sooner or later reason and common sense will triumph in the Olympic movement,” the statement concludes.which also advocates a reform of the IOC in the name of the traditions of Olympism that are immune to political influences.

The International Olympic Committee announced this Thursday an updated list of 22 Russian and 17 Belarusian athletes authorized to compete as neutrals in the Paris 2024 Games, which take place between July 26 and August 11.

After initially banning athletes from both countries from participating in world sport due to the war in Ukraine, The IOC planned its gradual return under a neutral flag, subject to strict conditions and excluding team events from the beginning.

Participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is subject to the athletes “accepting the individual invitation and signing the conditions of participation applicable to all participants,” the IOC said.

“These conditions include a commitment to respect the Olympic Charterin particular the peace mission of the Olympic Movement,” he stressed.
