Ryu Saito (22, JES Group), a judoist who has been selected to represent Japan at the Paris Olympics in the men’s over 100 kg category, won the Pan American Open. He won the preliminary round, which was a round-robin tournament with three competitors, with two consecutive wins and came out on top, and then won the final against the second-placed player.

Saito’s final competition before the Olympics was scheduled to be an international tournament in May, but he suddenly decided to take an unusual strategic step and compete in a lower-level tournament to improve his seeding in the actual tournament. His victory will raise his seeding from 7th to 6th. This will allay his concerns that he will be less likely to face top gold medal contenders if he advances to the quarterfinals.

The two fighters he faced in this tournament were local Peruvian fighters with almost no experience in international competitions. All three matches ended in crushing victories, with ippon wins in under 30 seconds. (Kyodo News)
