Salvadoran Badminton Star Uriel Canjura Shines in YONEX US Open 2024 Tournament Ahead of Paris Olympics

The Suchitoto native participated in another high-level event ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

Salvadoran Uriel Canjura, the best in national badminton, was able to reach the quarterfinals in the YONEX US Open 2024 tournament, held in the United States.

The Cuscatleco, who is already qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (he was the first Salvadoran to achieve this, and he did so directly by ranking), was doing well in an international tournament that brings together some of the best on the planet.

In the quarterfinal round, he had to face the number two seed in the event, the Japanese Koki Watanabe, number 20 in the world rankings.

In straight sets, spread over half an hour, the Asian won with partial scores of 21-8 and 21-10 against the player from Suchitoto, who thus said goodbye to the singles event.

Canjura, currently ranked 56 in the world, previously defeated Nhat Nguyen of India 21-17, 21-9 in the round of 16. Before that, on June 26, he defeated Kevin Cordón of Guatemala, the seventh seed in the event, 20-22, 22-20, 21-8.

Canjura secured his qualification by reaching the final of the XXVII YONEX Pan Am Individual Championships Guatemala 2024, where it was enough for him to reach the semifinal. In that tournament, he took silver after losing against local Kevin Cordón for the top title of the event.
