San Antonio Spurs: Looking Towards Future Success in the 2025 Draft

The level of talent in the 2024 draft has given a lot to talk about, and not exactly for the better. Apparently, several executives came to define it as the worst draft they have seen, which is not necessarily a problem for teams looking for good complements but for those who want to add a potential star to the squad. And that’s where the San Antonio Spurs find themselves.

The Texans already have Victor Wembanyama, called to be the cornerstone of their project, but they want to add a second sword that, due to the conditions of this generation, they do not seem to have found in the draft. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, a journalist from ESPNthe franchise feels that its time to get that player will come in 2025, not this year, reflecting that they seem more focused on the next draft than on the one that ended a few hours ago.

This is interesting in a few ways. First, it sounds like a way to put on the brakes and make it clear that they are not going to try to run before they can walk. Wembanyama’s rookie season has been so good that many were wondering if this team was ready to start looking up, but management is indirectly saying no, they will remain a lottery team next year and will try to get another young player of value. Or at least that is what this rumor suggests.

This is a reading that fits with the fact that they traded the No. 8 pick to the Timberwolves, evidencing their lack of interest in the other players they could select. The Spurs prioritized receiving two future first-rounders from Minnesota, so far away in time that it is difficult to assign a value to them, over adding another youngster to the roster this year, which also speaks to the fact that they do not consider the 2024 draft to be the one that will give them a boost.

However, it’s also interesting to interpret this information from the perspective of Stephon Castle, who has been selected by San Antonio with the fourth pick but who they don’t necessarily see forming a star duo with Wemby. Can the young point guard prove them wrong?
