Sanne Cant is in her final season as a cyclist. The 33-year-old cyclist of Fenix-Deceuninck dreamed of a farewell through the big gate at the Olympic Games. Her 2nd place at the Belgian Championship on Sunday gave strength to that application. But it was not granted to her.

Sanne Cant was the best of the rest on Sunday in Zottegem behind an unassailable Lotte Kopecky. The world champion is also the spearhead of the Olympic selection.

Cant responded emotionally on Sunday after the race: “I couldn’t end my career in a better way. I still hope that I can go to the Games and then I will have experienced everything I could.”

But that Olympic participation will remain a gap in her record. She made this clear last night in a post on Instagram.

“I have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions in recent days. I am very happy with my performance on Sunday, but I received the call yesterday that I did not expect.”

“All I can do at the moment is try to come to terms with this disappointment…”

Remarkable: 18-year-old Fleur Moors, 4th at the Belgian Championships on Sunday, was one of the first to encourage her colleague: “You deserved that selection so much!!”

Yesterday, Sven Vanthourenhout, the men’s national coach, announced his Olympic selection. The women’s selection will be made by national coach Ludwig Willems. It is not yet known who will go besides Kopecky, that will be announced in the coming days.
