Sebastian Baumgartner Joins VfL Bochum as Goalkeeping Coach: A New Chapter Begins

After six years at FC Red Bull Salzburg, Sebastian Baumgartner, an ambitious goalkeeping coach, is swapping the Austrian Alps for the Ruhr region. The 37-year-old from Salzburg is joining VfL Bochum and will lead goalkeeping training there.

Baumgartner after Bochum deal: “Huge honor”

“For me, this is a great step in my career. Being a goalkeeping coach in one of the top five leagues is a huge honor and at the same time a challenge that I am extremely excited about,” Baumgartner told SALZBURG24.

Following the departure of club legend Herbert Ilsanker, 38-year-old Portuguese Pedro Felipe da Silva Pereira (most recently goalkeeping coach at Al-Sadd in Qatar) will take over the reins in Pep Lijnders’ team together with former Bulls goalie Eddie Gustafsson.

“Servus Salzburg” – with these words Baumgartner said goodbye on his social media to a club that shaped him from U13 goalkeeping coach to Champions League goalkeeping coach and two-time champion.

Former Salzburg resident impresses with “innovative ideas”

The move to VfL Bochum comes at an exciting time, as the club is undertaking a major overhaul of its coaching team under the leadership of new head coach Peter Zeidler, who is moving to Bochum from FC St. Gallen along with assistant coach Maxime Antonilli. Baumgartner will play a key role in the reorientation of the club at the former Salzburg club, particularly in the further development of the goalkeepers.

Marc Lettau, sporting director of VfL Bochum, is convinced of the qualities of the new goalkeeping coach. “Sebastian Baumgartner has convinced us with his innovative ideas and his comprehensive conceptual work. His ability to develop goalkeepers at the highest level will be an enormous asset to our club,” said Lettau about the new addition in a press release.
