Sebastian Ofner im Mallorca Country Club
Conditions were not easy for Sebastian Ofner in the quarter-finals in Mallorca. But the unseeded Styrian fought successfully against the wind and his opponent Alex Michelsen and ultimately defeated the American in three sets. At the beginning of the match, the 19-year-old Michelsen quickly managed the first break, meaning Ofner was 1:4 behind early on and had to give up the first set after just 28 minutes. In the second set, Ofner adopted a different strategy.
The Styrian secured the 6:5 in the second set with a lot of risk and fended off break balls and took Michelsen’s own serve to win the set. In the third set, Ofner was clearly the better player and the young American helped the Austrian to the decisive break of the third set with three double faults. Thus, “Ofi” is in the semifinals after just under two hours in his debut at the Mallorcan tournament and also moves into his second semifinal of the calendar year 2024. The next opponent of the Austrian top player will be either the number one seed Ben Shelton or the qualifier Paul Jubb.
Monfils advances in three sets
The sixth-seeded showman Gael Monfils has also made it into the semifinals of the ATP Tour 250 tournament. The experienced Frenchman defeated the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in three sets, 6:3, 4:6 and 6:4. The 37-year-old Monfils will face the fourth-seeded Alejandro Tabilo in the round of 16.
