Second Belgian in the NBA: Ajay Mitchell drafted by NY Knicks, traded to Oklahoma

The time has come: we have a second Belgian in the NBA. After Toumani Camara last season, a fellow countryman was also drafted this year in the world’s largest basketball competition. He was the 38th pick of the New York Knicks, but was immediately traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

In round two of the NBA draft, Ajay Mitchell won. Our 22-year-old compatriot was not selected in the first round yesterday, today he was the 38th pick of the New York Knicks.

They immediately traded him to Oklahoma City and so Mitchell becomes a Thunder. Toumani Camara will be joined by a fellow countryman in the NBA, a childhood dream for the Belgian.

Last season, Mitchell caught the eye of Santa Barbara in college basketball, more than enough for the playmaker to earn a spot in the biggest basketball league in the world.

Wie is Ajay Mitchell?

Ajay Mitchell is the son of an American father and a Belgian mother. His father Barry made waves at Ostend in the 1990s.

Mitchell junior grew up in Belgium, but moved to the US 3 years ago to combine basketball and studies at the University of Santa Barbara. After 3 strong seasons with the Santa Barbara Gauchos, he made himself available for the NBA Draft. So with success.

In 2021, at the age of 18, Mitchell made his debut for the Belgian Lions in the European Championship preliminary round match against the Czech Republic.
