Securing a Place in the 8th: Belgium’s Path to Victory at Euro 2024

The Red Devils won 2-0 against Romania this Saturday during the 2nd day of the Euro 2024 group stage. With one more match to play, anything is still possible for the four teams in this group E since here they are each with 3 points on their counter. How can Belgium, currently 2nd, secure a place in 8th? We’ll explain that to you.

If Belgium wins against Ukraine on Wednesday, it will take one of the first two group places. If at the same time, Slovakia does not win against Romania, Domenico Tedesco’s men will even be first in the group. In the case of a Slovak victory, Belgium will then be 2nd.

Four teams with four points?

First place is also achievable in the event of a tie for Belgium, if this is also the case in the other meeting of the group because the four teams will then have four points. In this situation, the Devils must score more goals than Romania.

In this case, the first tie-breaking criterion is goal difference. Then the number of goals scored is taken into account. And if there is still a tie, the total disciplinary points will make it possible to decide between the nations.

A defeat does not mean elimination, as Belgium can join the 8th as one of the six best third-placed teams if Slovakia wins their match.

The 1st in this group E will face a 3rd in the group. The 2nd will inherit the 2nd from group D, that is to say most probably France or the Netherlands. Finally, the 3rd will find themselves facing the winner of group B or C, that is to say Spain (guaranteed to finish 1st in their group) or England (depending on the current situation in their group)
