A lot is already happening in the VfB Stuttgart squad, and the runner-up is also making new personnel changes: Fabian Wohlgemuth, currently still sports director, will take over as the new sports director on July 1st after a long search.

“In the short term,” not much will change, the 45-year-old explains in an interview with kicker (Monday edition). “In the medium term, we will modify our structures and distribution of tasks. It is our aim to continue to drive the overall topic of sport at VfB. We want to make visible progress equally in the professional team, in the junior league and in women’s football.” Therefore, his future daily routine will “have a further focus on dealing with strategic questions.”

One question that needs to be clarified is who will succeed Wohlgemuth as VfB sports director. Even when his internal promotion was complete, former captain Christian Gentner, who is currently head of the licensed players department, was considered the favorite. Is he also Wohlgemuth’s favorite?

Wohlgemuth: “It’s not about profiling”

“I have had Christian at my side as a competent and reliable partner over the past 18 months and have come to value him,” he replied in an interview when asked what Gentner’s chances are. The “best solution” must be found, and Wohlgemuth does not rule out an external one. “It’s not about profiling. The new sports director must have an immediate impact, understand VfB and its environment and also fit into the team on a personal level.”

Is Gentner, who moved to the official level in January 2023, ready for this? “Perhaps it is a core competency not to come up with loud tones but with results,” says Wohlgemuth. “Christian has always taken the stance of wanting to learn and, on that basis, to constantly expand his sphere of responsibility and influence.”

The new sports director does not see himself as being under pressure in this personnel matter. “We will certainly not spend a lot of time answering this question, but we will certainly take the necessary amount of time. We are currently fully able to act.”

In the kicker interview, Wohlgemuth also talks about VfB’s tricky transfer phase and explains how he would have reacted to an external sports director. The Monday edition is also available here as an eMagazine.
